A Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) is a key element of Wide Area Monitoring Systems (WAMS), designed to simultaneously and continuously measure voltage magnitudes and phase angles at system buses, as well as current magnitudes and phase angles across branches such as lines, transformers, and other series components. By utilizing PMUs, WAMS can generate synchrophasors—time-synchronized phasor measurements—that provide a comprehensive view of the power grid’s real-time performance.
